Our Mission is to provide high quality interpreting and educational services.

Felicia Douglas, a Nashville, TN native, is an American Sign Language (ASL), Provisional Licensed Interpreter who has interpreted for the education, religious, Video Relay Service (VRS), and community sectors since 2008. Felicia’s passion for assisting the Deaf by being their advocate and helping bridge the gap for equal access, prompted her to start Equivalent Communications, LLC in 2021.

At the young age of 7, her Deaf next-door neighbor Donna Hawks, introduced her to signing because of young Felicia asking, “Why do you talk like that?” and “What is that thing in your ear?” Donna patiently responded by inviting Felicia to come into her home so that she could explain. She taught Felicia about hearing aids and the TTY machine used for her to communicate with the hearing world. Just as destiny would have it, Felicia’s mother had a sign language book and Felicia took it over to Donna’s every day to learn signing. In high school, Felicia found herself attracted to the Deaf students and it was then that she realized interpreting for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing would be her life’s work.

She received her ASL degree from Nashville State Community College, her Management and Human Relations degree from Trevecca Nazarene University, and her Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education degree from Liberty University.  She is a member of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Tennessee Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (TNRID), American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA), and a member of the National Alliance of Black Interpreters (NAOBI) North Carolina chapter. To keep her skills sharpened, she attends a variety of workshops, trainings, and professional development.

Felicia credits her interpreting success to Donna Hawks and the constant support of her family.
